Miletus (Turkish:
Milet) was an ancient
Greek city on western coast of
Anatolia. Its ruins are located near the
Balat village of
Aydın Province. Before the
Persian invansion in the middle of the
6th century BC,
Miletus was the greatest of
Greek cities. The earliest available archaeological evidence indicates that the islands on which
Miletus was originally placad were inhabited by a
Neolithic population in
3500-3000 BC.
